Power

Most Notebooks consume from 3.5 to 4.5 A. This is maximum consumption, the average depends on what you are actually doing with it - all Radio functions like Bluetooth or WLan consume a lot, while Textediting is more economic. Generally a more powerful laptop will consume more energy - as long as you didn´t buy the latest Dual Core processors: they consume less energy and have more power compared to the older Pentium series.

You´ve got two possibilities to connect your laptop to your 12V-system:

With a DC-AC Power Converter you transform your 12V DC to 240V AC power, to transform it then back (with the original charger) to the approx. 17 to 19V DC your laptop actually needs.
Advantage: you can use the AC Power from the converter for several other devices on board, as long as you bought an expensive Sine-Converter.
Disadvantage: you convert two times forth and back, with an energy loss both times, and the Sine Converter your laptop needs is expensive.

Second way:
You purchase a special Car-Charger for your laptop which converts the 12V DC from your batteries directly to the 19V DC needed by your laptop.
Thats what I have done.......
Disadvantage: 50 Euro

A short look at your Energy-Settings definitely makes sense for both solutions (Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options). Sending your Notebook to sleep when not needed of course safes energy....
