Automatic Updates....
Most of our Operating Systems and a fair number of programs contain an "Automatic Update" function, meaning that they try to talk to their Home Servers in Seattle or elsewhere to get the latest patches downloaded as soon as they sense an Internet connection.
On my Broadband connection at home I regard that as a good service - in the Internet cafe somewhere paying a Euro for a minute to send emails and take care of my homepage it could be a hard time waiting for my laptop downloading 20MB patches from Microsoft and after a reboot restarting downloads of Virusdefinitions while my payed Internet time keeps ticking.
So don´t forget to set these programs and your Windows to at least ask before downloading....in Windows you´ll find those settings in Control Panel -> Automatic Updates.
